Our Mission

VSF Italia is a non-profit organization that bases its activities on international cooperation and collaboration: it develops international and national projects in collaboration with groups and associations that share the same vision.

VSF promotes:

sustainable, low-impact and low-input agriculture and livestock production that respect the animal welfare and behavior, for global health;

the defense of biodiversity

education, information and nutrition for the most vulnerable rural populations

The 5 pillars of VSF

FOOD SOVEREIGNTY

It is the right of every human being to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced in both an environmentally and economically sustainable manner. Producers, processors and consumers must stand together at the center of food policies.

One Health

Land, animals and human beings are three inextricably linked elements. A comprehensive health includes social, environmental, animal, plant and human health.

FAMILY FARMING

It ensures the resilience of rural communities to climate change by preserving biodiversity, it mitigates the environmental impact of livestock farming by integrating it with agriculture, it fights poverty and supports the socio-economic development of rural areas by supporting pastoralism and ensuring the social and economic role of animals. It defends and supports local breeds and traditional breeding, feeding and care practices.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

It starts from the people and reaches the institutions, not vice versa. The real needs of the people, the local resources available l, the access to the land, the respect for traditions, and the enhancement of knowledge are at the heart of the development process.

ANIMAL WELFARE

The Lisbon Treaty officially declared animals to be “sentient beings”. VSF adopts Brambell’s Five Freedoms. The ethics and the role of the veterinarian are fundamental to ensure their competent implementation.

Freedoms

1. From thirst, hunger and malnutrition
2. From discomfort
3. From pain, injury and disease
4. To express normal species-specific behavioural characteristics
5. From fear and distress

(Brambell, 1965)
